Broc 3 - Cover Me Impressed
Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

Don’t normally like this type of mega-hit pop song but damn it, it has such a catchy hook and the vocals are just beautiful.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

All three covers are done extremely well with impeccable vocals.

The choreography on Walk Off the Earth’s video is pretty amazing and fun to watch.

The vocals and harmonies really stand out for Megan Davies and Emily Hackett.

But the ultimate reason that I chose to present this song was to feature Mike Geier’s brilliant rendition. Mike has been around the Atlanta music scene for decades and during that time has tested a few different personas. There’s been KINGSIZED’s grand Las Vegas style Elvis shows, Tongo Hiti’s surreal Hawaiian-flavored pop and rock creations and, finally, the bizarre Puddles Pity Party’s sad clown routine. Mike has always seemed to do well for himself but his break really came when he met Scott Bradlee and they collaborated to produce the Royals masterpiece. Royals went viral and put Mike and Puddles on the map. It literally triggered worldwide tours and a large catalog of interesting covers.

Through the years I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with Mike on a few occasions. He’s such an approachable, interesting and witty guy to talk with and he’s got a diverse and impressive taste in music. To be honest, Puddles is probably my least favorite of Mike’s creations but I couldn’t be happier that after so many years of hard work he has finally found something to expose his talent to the world and, hopefully, set himself up financially for the long-term.

The first one was visually interesting and sounded good.

Really liked the vocal harmonies on the second version.

Mike is a great singer, and he really blew me away when I saw him perform live. I remember seeing this video posted on facebook years ago.

All good versions. Toss-up between the second and third versions. I almost voted for Mike, but I played version two a second time and the harmony vocals carried the day.

Everyone acquitted themselves well enough. If all four were competing I would have chosen the original fourth place. Mostly because I hate the dense fog of production accompanying much pop music and the finger-snap percussion is very irritating. The video of two cheesers boxing in a sanitary room could also be less than genius. I voted for Walk Off The Earth. More punch, good variety of vocalists, sounded like an upgrade right off the bat. Megan and Emily were good but not great. Never heard of them but I looked them up. Both Nashville based hopefuls. There is probably 5,000 people in Nashville at least this good. Big Mike is always worth listening to and watching and his slower version was solid. Not much for his backers to do on this one.

I must admit, this is a great song. It’s been covered by a ton of people. Even Bruce Springsteen. All three versions here have their pluses, and very few minuses.

I went with Walk Off the Earth. They sound great, the video is fun, and they’re very talented. But it was a close call, with Megan Davies and Emily Hackett doing a beautiful version, with really fabulous harmonies.

Scott Bradlee et al. also did a commendable version. Bradlee has an impressive voice, for sure. Not certain what the deal is with his silly clown costume, but that’s neither here nor there. The reason why I don’t think this version is a contender is the sub-par background vocals. They were far back in the mix, and they were just average. Otherwise, it would have been a tossup between any of these versions.

Don’t like this song. Kinda boring; kinda doesn’t go anywhere. That said, I enjoyed all 3 covers better than the original. I went with Megan Davies and Emily Hackett because their vocals reminded me a little of the Indigo Girls.
