Broc 3 - Cover Me Impressed
Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

The Original

This song illustrates what Elvis could of (should of) been if not for the inexplicable power and persuasion of the loathsome, manipulative Colonel Tom Parker. Elvis had so much soul and one of the greatest voices of all time. He wanted badly to sing gospel, rhythm and blues, rockabilly and rock. But somehow Parker had a hold of him and badgered him into all sorts of endeavors that Elvis was averse to. It was Parker that signed the movie deals that made Elvis a cartoon and forced him to sing mostly goofy ridiculous songs. Elvis hated it but for whatever reasons could not break away. We’ll never know why Parker had the power he did over Elvis and more importantly what could have been if he hadn’t.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Read it in the Sunday Papers …

A Spanish civil servant didn’t show up at work for six years, and his absence was only noticed when he was nominated for a dedicated service award. Joaquin Garcia, 69, was tasked with overseeing the construction of a water plant in Cadiz in 2004, but decided the job was beneath him and stayed home to read philosophy. He kept collecting his $41,500 salary until city officials tried to give him an award for 20 years of loyal service – prompting co-workers to say they hadn’t seen him in years. Garcia was fined $30,300 last week for his six-year absence, but he’s appealing, saying he’s the victim of a media “lynching.”

If I’m ever crazy enough to get married again this will be my wedding song.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds:

I decided to include this cover just as a frame of reference of what could happen when some muttonhead gets it in his head to cover a great song. I will warn you, this is ugly to the point of profanity. (I shudder to think of what the Caveman might do if he ever got his claws into this character.)

Very nice rendition by Neil, Joni Mitchell and The Band. I’ve always wondered why Neil never recorded with Joni. They’re old buddies and her voice works well with his signature falsetto.

Okay, when I saw Tom Jones covered Black Betty I felt I had to include it for comical purposes only. But, damn, I have to admit that Jones (aka TJ) actually does a credible job on it.
