The Original
I feel The Pixies are one of the great almost forgotten bands of the 80’s. Just a great, innovative band that had their own unique sound. Released many fine albums. Really wish I had seen them live.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Okay, I know there has been some complaints about Mike Geier’s Puddles the Clown character. As I’ve said before, it is my least favorite of Geier’s personas. I do wish he’d lose the clown garb when he’s doing serious material. But the guy has an exceptional voice, he does some excellent cover versions, and I really like almost all of the songs he chooses to do. So … block out the silly clown getup and concentrate on the quality of the cover song because, well, there will be more Puddles’ covers forthcoming.
I didn’t know the original. I’m not a Pixies fan, but I also haven’t heard much of their material.
First to Eleven had the best sound and best video.
First to Eleven, damn that lead singer is distracting! So attractive. Love this rockin’ cover. They do this great song justice.
Puddles: As always Geier’s voice carries the day. But the version was too slowed down for my tastes.
Tom Cooper: I often like acoustic versions of rocking songs and this one works well for me. Nice job!
First to Eleven gets my vote.
First To Eleven come out of the gate well. The playing is clean and the sound well balanced and Audra is a comely little Betty Two Stars but by the end they brought nothing new and left me with nothing memorable. Three minutes fifty is too long to support Tom Cooper’s interpretation. The initial charge delivered by the fresh approach has eroded. That leaves us with the Puddly One. I’m not saying the man doesn’t have a nice diction but his elocution! Whew! The video choice helped as well.
I love the Pixies and have a lot of their albums, but this isn’t one of their strongest songs. I can take it or leave it. I voted for First to Eleven. That girl has a great voice, and they really did a tight, rocking versions.
Tom Cooper’s version was surprisingly good. Just a nice, straightforward rendition.
As for Mike Geier, if I have to see that stupid clown makeup one more time, I’m taking a hostage.
