Such a well-crafted ballad on the angst of unrequited love. Just Brilliant!

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

In my mind, The Band’s ultimate masterpiece among a long list of gems.

The Mekons do an original interpretation of the song, for which they deserve some points. But I just don’t like the vocals.

My Morning Jacket does a credible, reverent cover sticking very closely to the original. Nice but why not just listen to The Band’s version?

Yes, Eric Clapton is a real prick these days and I generally avoid including any of his work. But the fact is, he delivers an excellent version. His vocals are great, the backup vocals superb and there is just no denying Clapton’s guitar expertise. So, begrudgingly he gets my vote.

A very pleasant surprise to see this song appear today. Probably my favorite song by The Band, it is also likely the best showcase for Rick Danko’s singing. The band had three great singers and Danko and Manuel were perfect for the weepers. An odd choice for British punks Mekons? Not when you consider that Jon Langford and Sally Timms later moved to Chicago and became members of Bloodshot Records’ stable of Alt-Country rockers. But third place today. Eric Clapton did a very fine and sincere effort. He became so obsessed with The Band after Music From Big Pink that he went to Woodstock hoping he could convince them to let him join. I voted for My Morning Jacket as I am a fan and know this cover well.
