Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
I’ve had this Buzzcocks CD for years, but I don’t know it very well. I didn’t recognize the title, but upon hearing it, realized I’d heard it before.
Never heard of any of the contestants.
The first cover featured very good singing, but all she has to offer is displayed in the first few seconds, and is repeated for nearly five minutes. She still earned the vote, and received points for changing the original.
The second cover was very tinny, trebly. Didn’t do much for me. Also too close to the original.
Third contestant is also very faithful to The Buzzcocks version, but received some humor points with the radio call-in banter.
I love the Buzzcocks. I have their Spiral Scratch EP, an absolute punk classic. I got their first album when it came out, and have a bunch of singles, some bootlegs on cassette, the whole shebang. Great, great band. They’re trying to continue on after Pete Shelley’s death, but it would be like the East Street Band without Bruce.
This song is definitely not one of their best, lyrically or musically. And I didn’t like any of the covers. The slow piano version put me to sleep. The version by Winston K is disqualified merely by having the word Winston in their name. I gave it Porn Orchard, despite the rappy parts at the end, which I wasn’t crazy about.
I barely remember this one. Hadn’t heard it not heard it in many years. I went with Porn Orchard although the competition was not strong. They did get the lyrics wrong as did the Larry King caller but regardless an interesting and fun listen. I thought Shawndell Marks had a nice beginning, changing up the music but after a while it was just crawling along. Winston K? Nepo-babies? Only a fraction of the medley featured this song and the sound was very tinny.
