THE CLASH of Cover Tunes

As you could imagine, there is a ridiculous number of great covers for this classic. I picked these three interesting ones for today. I am sure that I will revisit this gem again sometime down the road.

Broc 3 - Cover Me Impressed
Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

Okay, this song has a convoluted history. It was originally composed by Bob King to be just an instrumental. Ray Charles heard it and along with Renald Richard put lyrics to it. Of course, Ray and His Band had a massive hit with their new creation, which was released in December 1954. Meanwhile, the instrumental version that Bob King composed did not hit the airwaves until 1960 when Jimmy Smith released his version.

Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

I cannot exactly say why but this just might be my favorite song by The Clash. The driving, pitch-perfect, in-your-face, and above all pissed off delivery had me from the first time needle hit vinyl!

From my research Suze DeMarchi’s version (feat. Dallas Frasca) is one of the best covers of this song. Unfortunately it is on an Australian small label album (“Home”) that, short of flying Down Under for a used copy, is damn near impossible to get a hold of (and even at that it apparently would be pretty difficult to locate!). Even appealed directly to Suze on Twitter … no response. 😦 I had never heard of Suze but apparently her Aussie acclaim arose from her earlier ’90s band Baby Animals who were apparently known for their high-energy, guitar-driven sound (never heard of them either). So, alas, had to go with the best (or, at least, most interesting) of what was the available.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band feat. Nils Lofgren:

Bruce Springsteen opened his concert at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn on April 23, 2016, with a tribute cover of “Purple Rain”. This performance occurred two days after Prince’s death on April 21, 2016. The show featured the stage bathed in purple light, and the band delivered the song as an opener rather than their usual setlist, featuring a notable guitar solo by Nils Lofgren.

Fun Fact: Prince’s Purple Rain held the Number One spot on the Billboard 200 album chart for 24 consecutive weeks before finally being surpassed by Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A.

There’s also an a cappella version of this song. Usually I would include something like that in the post. But I don’t like it much so, considering it is my blog, I have chosen not to include it.

Highly Acclaimed Cover

Some call this the “definitive modern cover”. Supposedly earned high praise from Paul Simon. Personally I’m not that impressed, which is why I left it out of the competition.
