The Original
The Kinks:
Definitive Cover
I was tempted to put this in the competition but The Pretenders’ cover is almost iconic and I saw at least one critic call it the definitive version. Don’t know about that but it certainly is a medalist!

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
Multiple good options abound today. I would have voted for The Pretenders were they included. That’s my favorite version. Euro-Trash Girl opened with a very Keith Richards sounding riff before inviting the whole neighborhood like Lulu with Pied Piper magic but you can’t achieve the song’s goal by letting every Teddy and Tina to the party. Jonathan the strum jockey extraordinaire made an earnest plea and I had walked past the hospital, the bakery and the Fenway before I realized my shirt was only half wet. Rhoda Dakar was bouncier than the Easter Bunny after half a bag of coke. I rode my horse halfway to Mullingar before I realized I was no longer sobbing. I picked Action Camp. The loose parts, shaking about, thundering, the bass amp, the radiator, the bartender’s hands, opening up just enough holes for the vocals to stream through for chunk yardage.
Such a simple and succinct gem!
Just amazing to see The Pretenders so young. I had never seen this video before. Fantastic!
Action Camp delivers somewhat of a poor woman’s Pretenders cover. Nice emotional vocals and driving guitar.
Jonathan excels at EVERYTHING and this is no exception. Master acoustic guitar aficionado! Great choice of song for him to cover.
Love Euro-Trash Girl’s vocals (and band name). Excellent driving cover! Great fade-out!
Well Rhoda Dakar certainly gives it a bit of a different sound. Don’t know exactly how to describe it … maybe Caribbean … sorta Motown … eminently danceable. I very much enjoyed this unique interpretation.
I loved them all. Truly fine covers. I went with Jonathan probably propelled from having just seeing him perform another superlative show.
