Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Love this song. Over commercialized but such a catchy tune. Can’t help but move around to the music when I hear it.

Song is simply too dynamic for Nouvelle Vague’s style of delivery.

Mixed Company acquits itself quite well with their fine acapella version.

But Save Ferris (unfortunately I screwed up their name in the post) knocks it out of the park! They capture all important elements in their stunning ska reinvention. This is quite simply one of the best ska covers I’ve ever heard and I’ve heard a lot of them. The first time I heard it I immediately ordered the album, which unfortunately, is very average. But they will live on in my esteem with this gem!

ahhh, if I’ve said it once… I’ve said it twice.
who can resist a dashing barechested young man in overalls.

still love both the tune and the visuals of those corner bopping goofballs two-stepping the night away in passionate regalia to both that fetching feisty little Irene …. And for some other unknown reason Johhny Ray?

Lovely stuff, and the ska dudes knocked it outta the park!

    Hmmm…

Well, I hate to differ with the always insightful RDubbs, but I only had a minimal fondness for this song when it came out, and I don’t think it’s stood the test of time. It just sounds corny and cheesy to me now, it’s only value being the nostalgic reverie it induces.

Slowing it down and doing a quiet, sultry version did not work for Nouvelle Vague. When she tries to sing the to-rah-yay part in that breathy voice, it sounds silly.

The Mixed Company a cappella version sounds too satirical; hard to take it seriously.

Gotta give it to Save Ferris with their boppin’ ska version. Didn’t love it, but it was the best version here, in my opinion.

More questions than answers. In the original video, is this fashion’s saddest moment? In what post-apocalyptic thrift store did they buy these? Is this the only mainstream hit about bukkake? I saw a shirt for sale that read “I came on Eileen”. I figure by now most of us have. I voted Save Ferris although the a capella version was impressive. They sounded soo clean scrubbed. I wonder if they dared to stop for ice cream before hustling back to church. I like Nouvelle Vague. They do many nice covers of 80s tunes in that late night lounge style.

I voted Nouvelle Vague. I can understand the lyrics better in their version, plus I gave them points for the drastic departure from the original.

I was gonna make a snarky comment about their fashion sense, but somebody beat me to it. Yikes!

  5. Suzanne Mucklow's avatar Suzanne Mucklow says:

Save Ferris on this one! Kept thinking Nouvelle Vague, while impressive, was going to shift gears to making Eileen the Girl from Ipanema which might’ve been cool? The Pitch Perfect-y cover was well done but not my bag. The end of the Save Ferris version made the decision for me!

I think I like Save Ferris’ version better than the original.

I had stumbled into Save Ferris version of this awhile back and loved it. Thought the same as Dubbs about ordering their CD, glad I didn’t now that Dubbs put the k-bosh on that.
