My favorite song from The Waterboys. Reminiscent of Tom Wait’s masterpiece, San Diego Serenade …

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Peter Mulvey’s version was too slow.

40 Thieves put forth a nice effort.

But I preferred Nick Parker’s understated cover. I thought the vocalists here won the day.

What a great song. I enjoyed every version. Peter Mulvey’s take seemed a bit understated. A slow build featuring a blanket of warmth that added some mystery although the lyrics were very discernible. 40 Thieves opted for an upbeat strum punctuated by percussion with fiddle coming in, the lyrics up front but my least favorite vocals of the contenders. Nick Parker (which one is he) had a strong advantage with the split screen video highlighting the ensemble but they also sounded great, filling the song out without the playing overshadowing the beauty of the song. They won my vote.

Never heard of any of the cover artists, but all were good.

I wondered who Nick Parker was because the women were doing most of the singing. Turns out he’s the guy with the beard that sometimes appears in the lower left. He didn’t write it, one can barely hear his occasional whispered vocal. Not sure if the guitar is a prop, but let’s put his name on this because…name recognition?

I listened to each a second time and voted Peter Mulvey.

My favorite Waterboys is “Fisherman’s Blues”.

I hadn’t heard this song in years. Pretty much had totally forgotten about it. Very nice hearing it again.

Tough call between 40 Thieves and Nick Parker, but I went with 40 Thieves. Both were excellent, though.

playing catch, and seriously behind here,

been a crazy busy 2 weeks. Thought retirement would be basically large gobs of sloth and gluttony, but so far sparse Pickens. Gotta work harder at it I guess ?

going with the Thieves. Really liked the first version too, but loved the way the Thieves blended those funky minor guitar chords with the traditional Irish fiddle.

plus, when you’re talking cover tunes,

professional thieves will always have an edge
