Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

The Original

The duet between Shane and Kirsty is simply magnificent!!! What a masterpiece!!!

The Pogues:

THE CLASH of Cover Tunes

There are so many fine artists that paid homage to this song, it was ridiculous narrowing it down to three.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

THIS IS ACTUALLY A POST FROM KERRY:

Never heard of the first act, and their version wasn’t bad, but was too similar to the original.

Puddles always sings great, and although I don’t know his duet partner, I thought they might get my vote.

Had to go with Billy Bragg. I like the addition of the harp, and their approach added a new wrinkle to the original. Good duet singing, and it helps that I’m a long time fan of Bragg.

Man, I don’t know how to vote here. The McDonald/Ruffy team as well as Geier/Large produce impeccable covers. Don’t know if you can do the song any better. Billy doesn’t quite have the singing voice of Ruffy and Geier but still puts forth a lovely ballad.

Have to vote for someone and I am going with Bragg/Florence solely because Billy is one of my favorite artists of all time. And the addition of the harp was a nice touch as well.

Three version pretty much the same. But I really like the use of the harp. So, that and a strong sentimental affinity for Billy Bragg tips the scale.

Tough pick between Amy McDonald and Billy Bragg. I love Billy, and his version was really lovely, but somehow, I feel that this song really needs to be rousing, and the Amy/Ruffy team

Enough with Pity Party. Yeah, he has a great voice, but that clown makeup annoys the shit out of me, for some reason. It’s irrational, I know. But still.

The Billy and Flo show sang the song well and the harp was a welcome addition but it just came off a bit too slow and well mannered. In a BBC studio so maybe they were more focused on avoiding mistakes and sounding good. What is missing is the spirit of the song. So essential to me. Puddles and Storm had a better vibe but I couldn’t vote for a recorded backing track, a clown and someone not in the same room. Dave Ruffy and Amy MacDonald came the closest perhaps spurred on by a real audience.
