Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
Richard Thompson puts forth a likable, serviceable take on the song. But I found nothing special here. Surprisingly, Thompson comes in third place here.
Redd Kross presents a much more interesting electric version of the song and in most cases would have gotten my vote.
But in a bit of a shocker, I felt that Ringo Ska put forth the most interesting and fun version. They came out of nowhere to steal the race.
I love Richard Thompson’s voice, but this version fell kind of flat.
Redd Kross isn’t a band I know very well or think about at all, except for their excellent cover of Citadel by the Stones, which I heard decades ago and it stayed in my consciousness forever.
I’ve been a fan of George Skarrison and of Paul McSkartney for years, but I had never heard of Ringo Ska. I have to say, I like that version the best.
Close call between Ringo Ska and Redd Kross. Had to listen to each a second time, with Redd Kross winning by a whisker.
Sometimes the sound on some of these YouTube clips isn’t the greatest. Ringo Ska’s version came thumpin’ and jumpin’ out of the speakers in a clear and powerful way that really got my attention.
I don’t remember hearing of Redd Kross prior to their appearance last month on this site covering “Dancing Queen”.
I took a look at the photo of the band members and noted the “creative” spelling of the band name. I expected something halfway between Spinal Tap and Tenacious D.
That’s funny, Kerry. The Redd Kross picture is pretty ridiculous.
I voted for Redd Kross in a close one over Ringo Ska. Their Bowie/Sweet ‘74 glam rock style hit the spot on the third listen. The song fits the ska style well also. Richard Thompson has a high floor so he can do this competently but it’s a far cry from his wheelhouse. He can write a great song, wring the neck of that guitar or wring every bit of sorrow out of a sad song but having him cover a pop song by a boy band is like using top shelf vodka in a bloody mary.
Went with Redd Kross because they sound like Sweet.
