Even having been massively overplayed by now, “Dark Side of the Moon”, still blows me away …

THE CLASH of Cover Tunes
I strive to feature diverse genres in the covers that I select. I think that I achieved that nicely on this post.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

This one was an easy call. Bim all the way. Short and very sweet…and a lotta fun.
By the way, the Easy Star reggae edition of Dark Side of The Moon is mostly excellent. But this last song is one of the weaker efforts on the album. In general, however, the Easy Star reggae-ized versions of the albums they cover are excellent. I highly recommend their Sgt Pepper’s LHCB and their OK Computer.
Since Dark Side of the Moon is one piece it is hard to excerpt a track cleanly. This led to some very abrupt endings. I voted Easy Stars All Stars with Dr. Israel. The dub mechanisms such as echo effects fit the spacey psychedelia important to the song. The spoken word snippets and laughter and odd percussion were drawing me in deeper until being jarred by the abrupt ending. Star Death and White Dwarfs gave a slowcore version with a nice theremin giving that spooky edge. Seemed a bit of a tease as it was just a small part of a whole. Didn’t expect much from Celtic Pink Floyd but I thought they did well and used a tin whistle to mimic the same sound as the theremin. Bim Skala Bim was my least favorite since they maintained none of the essential elements, losing all space and lyrical content in favor of a generic ska beat that could be any song.
While Easy All-Stars and Star Death et al. throw down some very nice covers I feel that they both lacked in creativity. I liked the Celtic Pink Floyd interpretation quite well and thought that they would win my vote but Bim Skala Bim skanked in at the last moment and won going away.
Interesting array of styles on this one. My favorite was Easy Star All-Stars.
