I still contend that the Violent Femmes self-titled debut album is as good as any release in the 80’s.

Kitty Karlyle:
Before settling into Hollywood Squares as a regular, Kitty Carlisle sang opera and enormously more importantly, starred with the Marx Brothers in “A Night At The Opera”. I have to imagine that this goofball band, playing around a little with the spelling, is somehow (or at least I am hoping) paying homage to the great Kitty Carlisle …

Kim’s cover is included because one of the cover sites that I use crowned it as this song’s best cover. Not sure that I agree … Do you?

Phil wrote some of the greatest topical political protest songs of all time. Most were blistering attacks on racist and/or wrongheaded political institutions. But it was also great fun when Phil used his priceless wit to enormous effect. “Outside of a Small Circle of Friends” and “Love Me, I’m a Liberal” come straight to mind, along with one of my all-time favorites, “Draft Dodger Rag”.
