THE CLASH of Cover Tunes

The Waterboys vs. Playing for Change feat. Vasti Jackson, Keb Mo and friends vs. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band feat. Nils Lofgren
The Waterboys:
Playing for Change feat. Vasti Jackson, Keb Mo and friends:
Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band feat. Nils Lofgren:

Bruce Springsteen opened his concert at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn on April 23, 2016, with a tribute cover of “Purple Rain”. This performance occurred two days after Prince’s death on April 21, 2016. The show featured the stage bathed in purple light, and the band delivered the song as an opener rather than their usual setlist, featuring a notable guitar solo by Nils Lofgren.

Fun Fact: Prince’s Purple Rain held the Number One spot on the Billboard 200 album chart for 24 consecutive weeks before finally being surpassed by Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!B

The Waterboys knock it out of the park with a nice Celtic touch.

Vasti Jackson’s vocals are superlative. As usual, overall, Playing for Change delivers another excellent cover, although I enjoy it more with the juxtaposition of various artists and countries.

Springsteen’s tribute is spectacular, replete with purple lighting, and what could you say about Nils’ amazing guitar solo? The guy is such a fantastic guitar player, it’s such a shame that he has such an odd voice, or he would have probably done more solo work.

The Waterboys’ cover is magnificent but Springsteen’s vocals, Nils’ phenomenal guitarwork and the purplish aura make their cover definitive. And I just love when Springsteen enthusiastically gives a fist pump as Nils is blasting away on his solo.,

Never been into Prince, but I listened to both of his versions.

Would have expected to vote for The Waterboys, but I wasn’t crazy about that version.

    Springsteen’s live version was good.

Voted Playing For change, helped along by the video.
