Cover Me Impressed
With a focus on the 60's-90's music scene, CMI is a Paradiso for Lovers Cover Songs! Each post focuses on a particular song and provides its original and most popular recordings as well as covers versions. Patrons of CMI vote on the most deserving cover version, which will then live to compete again, battling other cover songs in a future post.
Bands, musicians, troubadours, and their ilk, submit your cover songs for future CMI competitions.
CMI welcomes the opportunity to introduce new artists.

I Shouted Out, “Who Ate The Broccoli?”, When After All, It Was You And Me…
I read it in the Sunday papers …
A British woman has a special craving for household sponges – and eats as many as 20 a day. Emma Thompson has a condition called pica, in which people crave nonfood items to eat. “Some people go out for a steak, I would rather go out for a sponge”, says Thompson. “A couple of years ago, I was just washing the dishes and I seen the sponges with the scouring pads and I just thought it’d be quite interesting to try one of them. Ever since that I’ve been addicted to them.” Thompson likes to dip the sponges in dishwasher liquid before downing them. Thus far she has shown no ill effects.

One of my favorite Dylan songs. And I’m particularly proud of all three selected covers.

Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration (aka “Bobfest”):
Okay this is just plain ridiculous. Bob Dylan, Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton and George Harrison on stage at the same time! I mean c’mon. I don’t know, can anyone name another show that featured as many music icons on stage at the same time?

Remembering Larry Hagman …
Broccoli For Miles And Miles And Miles And Miles And Miles … Oh Yeah!
Many people do not realize that psychedelic drugs saved Larry Hagman. No, it’s true. In the mid-1960s, Hagman suffered a nervous breakdown while filming the TV show I Dream of Jeannie. The crew carted Hagman off to a psychiatrist, who suggested he combat his anxiety with LSD. A few days later, Hagman’s friend Peter Fonda took him to a Crosby, Stills and Nash concert, where he was handed several tabs of acid by folk rocker David Crosby. Hagman claims that he saw his body’s molecular structure during that first trip. And after a few more tabs of LSD and a whole lot of marijuana our boy, Larry, was back on his game. Hagman was an amiable eccentric who enjoyed dressing up as a British policeman or a French legionnaire and leading impromptu parades down the beach. Upon death his wish was to have his body ground up and “spread over a field and have marijuana and wheat planted and harvest it in a couple of years and make a big marijuana cake. People would eat a little Larry.” Sadly his last request went unfulfilled …
And what does Larry Hagman have to do with music and this blog? Nothing.

“Lying is second nature to him. More than anyone else I have ever met, Trump has the ability to convince himself that whatever he is saying at any given moment is true, sort of true, or at least ought to be true. It’s impossible to keep him focused on any topic. I feel a deep sense of remorse that I contributed to presenting Trump in a way that brought him wider attention and made him more appealing than he is. I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes, there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.”

“We urge Americans to be mindful of their leading role and international responsibilities as a great country and a great democracy when they go into the voting booths. Your mistake might spell a global disaster. There is no substitute for America as a pillar of world stability, and no one to contain an American Duce. Suddenly, browsing the world map, I recognize possible contours of the scenario described by George Orwell in the prophetic book he called simply 1984: three autocratic powers dominating the international landscape, each seized by fear, bigotry, and nationalism and controlled by the one and only strong leader or a politburo. Did Orwell simply make a 32-year mistake in timing?”
Former Russian Minister Andrei Kozyrev

Considering Stipe, Buck and Mills are somewhere on the crowded stage, this version of “It’s the End of the World …” is precluded from CMI competition. However, since I’ve enjoyed 5-8 many, many times over the past couple of decades and love the spectacle of so many Athens/Atlanta musicians on stage yucking it up with Athens Royalty, well, this gem from the past well deserves a seat at the table.
