My only regret with this beautiful ballad is that it is not just a little longer.

While not quite the power and splendor of “My Back Pages” from the same fest, still pretty damn good!

This version was recorded in memory of the Dunblane Massacre, March 13, 1996. The Dunblane massacre took place at Dunblane Primary School in Dunblane, Scotland. A shooter killed 16 children and one teacher before turning the gun on himself. It remains the deadliest mass shooting in British history.

A new verse was written, and the children choir who sang the chorus were brothers and sisters of the victims. The song was released December 9, 1996, and it reached number 1. The proceeds went to charities for children.

Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

It angers me to no end when someone has the gall to suggest that Neil was not the definitive creative genius behind Buffalo Springfield. The rest of the band could sing and play but simply did not have the creative chops to write the kind of lyrics and deliver those lyrics in such a unique way as Neil, which is what made this band a powerhouse. Evidence? “Broken Arrow”, “Burned”, Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It?”, “Down to the Wire”, “Expecting to Fly”, “Flying on the Ground is Wrong”, “I Am a Child”, “Mr. Soul”, “On the Way Home” … Enough said! This band would simply not have been considered great, let alone wildly influential, without Neil’s brilliance and creativity!!!

This beautifully poignant song illustrates that Phil was more than capable of writing excellent apolitical material. A wistful song of romance and reflection with such brilliant imagery. After Phil completed it, he called his ex-wife, Alice Skinner, and sang it to her over the phone. I imagine it was a last attempt to win back her love but, consistent with so many personal setbacks, it was not to be. Alice told him twice that it was a great song before she hung up. Phil Ochs, wracked with lifelong depression, hung himself in 1976. Could the world ever use a compassionate political force like Phil Ochs today …

The one thing that I will always remember regarding this beautiful song took place in early 1986. Pete and I went to see The Band at some fairground in Miami. Phenomenal show. The show ended with Richard Manuel doing vocals on I Shall Be Released. A few days later, after their next show in Winter Park, Richard Manuel hung himself. Can’t help but believe that Richard new what he was about to do as he sang it.
