Well, it’s about time. I’ve been waiting over a year for the next song on this blog. I would have thought such a long wait would have merited a song more monumental than this little ditty. But it’s so good to have Dubbsy back that I would have been satisfied with 5 different versions of The Witch Doctor song or Put the Lime in the Coconut.
As for the actual contest here, the original, the most popular and the 3 covers all basically sound like the same thing. The key to a any good 3-chord rock and roll song is usually not the music, but rather the attitude. There’s certainly plenty of that here, as all 5 are pretty good. I’m going with Steve Conte because he was once in the reformed New York Dolls, and he’s the same age as I am. So he’s due a bit of respect.

Dougie, I think you’ll be very happy with the upcoming selections as the next few weeks will be devoted to desert island songs.
I love all three versions (of course I do, I picked them!). A really hard decision. Conte very nearly got my vote for his exuberant guitar licks. But ultimately I gave it to Telegraph solely for the little ska touch that was thoughtfully added.

I didn’t know this song. The title doesn’t sound like one I’d typically expect of Fleetwood Mac, but I realize they had significant personnel and stylistic changes during their early years.
I voted for Conte because his version conjured images of ’50s era rock ‘n’ roll, while the competitors’ versions sounded punkier. It’s a good song that works either way.
I have a mental image of Conte performing this song dressed like Johnny Depp’s character in “Cry-Baby”.

Tough call. Great song. I heard this first on Miami public radio mid eighties. It must have been The Rezillos version. I am a fan of early Fleetwood Mac but was astonished to learn this was their song. I had never seen it on an album. It was the b-side of Man Of The World 1969. Anyway, my vote went to The Bishops because I thought they brought the shambolic feral heat with which this song sounds like it should be delivered.
