Broc 3 - Cover Me Impressed
Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

The Original

Some guy on the radio said that this song featured the first known bass solo. Wonder if it’s true. Apparently they had to keep rerecording because Entwistle kept breaking his strings.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Didn’t really know what to choose on this one. Each brought their own. Ended up going with Patti Smith’s chaotic tribute.

Great anthem by one of my all-time favorite acts. Unfortunately, the three covers ranged from “meh” on downward. I voted for the middle one.

Liquid Blue force the sound into the background, bring the lead vocal up front and feature the burbling bass. Interesting but too well behaved. Knox, Davies & Scabies keep the stutter, drumming, power, all elements threatening to come to a head but not fully exploding. Patti Smith: scattershot tension, thrusting about the room with elbows flying. Defiant. Snotty and ragged. Maniacal and raw. The winner.

A song near and dear to my heart, of course. Liquid Blue surprised me with their pretty good version. The bass solo is really the standout feature in this song, and their bass interlude was the best of the three, I thought. But Patti’s messy, sloppy version is really the essence of punk, the essence of what this song is really about, and I just had to go with her rendition.
