Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
Three bands on the stranger side covering one of Neil’s stranger songs. Fitting …
Hard to argue with any of the covers but this morning I enjoyed Bowie the most.
Three pretty good straight-forward covers. I went with the Frond because if NY had recorded this song in the mid-70’s – say around Zuma time – when he had developed more confidence in himself the song would have sounded like TBF’s version.
This was billed as “a pretty obscure song”, even though it’s early Neil Young. Well, I gotta admit I didn’t remember this song. The title didn’t ring any bells, and when I played the original I didn’t recognize it.
Close call between Bevis and Bowie. I had to listen to each a few times. I went with Bevis and assumed I’d be the only one voting for him, and maybe get accused of heresy for not voting Bowie.
I don’t remember this song. Shows how often I listened to Neil’s debut in its entirety. Also I have the Pixies 4 track single but I haven’t heard it in over a decade and never knew this was a cover. I have 19 Bevis Frond albums on CD and 6 more digitally but have never heard this track. Bowie has top musicians and producers but although it’s enjoyable it also seems as cold and robotic as his video image. Pixies rely on haze and atmospherics with Kim Deal handling the vocals. They lost an important dimension when she left. A lot of echo on the guitars. I like it but voted for The Frond. More humanity and sincerity in the vocal and the best guitar playing.
I’m surprised Bowie didn’t fare better here,
felt like he would have been licking his chops to take on all comers with one of Neil’s more ethereal tunes, right in his wheelhouse
eh, shows what I know🧐
Not considering a change of vote, but do gotta go back and give Bevis a second listen
