Broc 3 - Cover Me Impressed
Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

Just another Bob masterpiece. Ho hum. Can’t fathom how he churned out so many extraordinary lyrics.

The Original

Bob Dylan:

Dylan and The Band played it at The Last Waltz and I thought that I had heard it somewhere but apparently not. Can’t find it anywhere and I looked in a lot of places. I wanted it because the songs that are available of Bob and The Band at The Last Waltz are simply extraordinary. I offer up the concert for Bangladesh as a consolation prize of sorts.

Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and Ravi Shankar:

The Byrds and The Hollies, yes Kerry, I am intentionally making things hard on you …

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

These 3 covers are all solid. But my favorite cover of this song is by Richie Havens at the 30th Anniversary Bobfest in Madison Square Garden in ’92.

I certainly like it much more when you give three excellent covers, like today, than three sub-par covers, like the last entry. Still, it doesn’t make it any easier.

As much as I love The Byrds and The Hollies, I’m obsessed with Nina, and this kind of crooning, with the orchestration, transports me to a different world. She got my vote. But I’m gonna listen to all three again, just for the joy of it all.

The Byrds and The Hollies did what they did, shine on Dylan songs. But I had to go with Nina’s sweetly emotional interpretation.

I have been a Nina Simone fan for a while. To me this is the weakest Byrd’s cover of a Dylan song & the Hollies………………..just no.

This Hollies cover is from the ill-advised album of Dylan covers they released after Graham Nash had left the band. It has been reported Nash quit the band due to their decision to record the album. There was another cover from this album featured on this site several weeks ago, another Blonde on Blonde track (“I Want You”). I still like Allan Clarke’s vocals, but this is not The Hollies at their peak.

This version by The Byrds wasn’t originally released on any of their albums. It was an outtake from the sessions for (Untitled). It wasn’t released until the first boxed set came out in 1990. Oddly, there was also a version that was added as a bonus track to the reissue of Byrdmaniax that’s nearly identical, but features a slightly altered lyric at one point. I voted Byrds.

Nina Simone is a great singer, and she will receive enough votes to win today’s competition in a landslide.
