One of those songs I just could not get out of my head once I heard it. Grabs you from the very moment that the needle hits the vinyl. Ridiculously catchy.

The Jesus and Mary Chain:
THE CLASH of Cover Tunes
David Hasselhoff feat. Elliot Easton vs. Legiao Urbana vs. The Pixies
David Hasselhoff feat. Elliot Easton:
Hasselhoff holds the Guinness World Record as the most watched man on TV. As The Hoff said, “All I want to do is be onstage. A performer needs to perform.” Say what you will but this clown actually delivers a somewhat fairly respectable cover.
Legiao Urbana:
The Pixies:

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

This one could not have been easier.
Sorry Hoff, decent effort but I just cannot take you seriously.
Legiao Urbana’s version was totally devoid of the energy that makes this song so special.
The Pixies rock!
Well, I love the original. But…
Legiao Urbana is apparently the band name. I might have thought it was the name of the singer. That sounded like karaoke, and bad karaoke at that. I thought The Hoff was supposed to be the joke today. Heck, hand me a guitar as a prop, and I can top that right now.
I’m no Pixies scholar. I admit I haven’t heard a whole lot of their material. But I don’t care for the stuff I have heard.
Give it to The Hoff. Not the most nuanced vocals, but at least he wasn’t noise.
Great song to begin with. The Reid brothers did everything themselves on this album with only a drummer machine and a live drummer on one song. I don’t know if more cover options existed but if so I think Pixies could have been given the definitive cover status as they absolutely slayed it without changing it much. Legiao Urbana offered a lighter take which was fine but lacked the dynamics and punch to take it further.
Hasselhoff was much better than I expected therefore worse. He didn’t kill it but he didn’t embarrass himself. Fuck you Hasslehoff for letting me down by not letting me down.
The Jesus and Mary Chain are one of my absolute favorite bands. I’ve got all the albums, a pile of singles, some bootlegs, the biographies—you name it. (When I saw them in ’89, some nobodies called Nine Inch Nails opened. Wonder whatever happened to them…) This track is a great song from one of their stronger albums, so I was secretly hoping you wouldn’t include the Pixies’ version. I’ve heard it a million times, it’s killer, and I doubted anyone else could top it. Perhaps someone could. But not today.
I’ll admit, Hasselhoff blindsided me. I didn’t expect to enjoy it at all, and yet here we are. Legião Urbana’s version didn’t do much for me. I’m perfectly fine with an acoustic reinterpretation, but this song doesn’t really thrive in that format.
So yeah… the Pixies take it. No surprise, but still satisfying.
