The Cure:

THE CLASH of Cover Tunes

Kitty Karlyle vs. Luka Bloom vs. Ben Folds vs. Kim Wilde
Kitty Karlyle:

Before settling into Hollywood Squares as a regular, Kitty Carlisle sang opera and enormously more importantly, starred with the Marx Brothers in “A Night At The Opera”. I have to imagine that this goofball band, playing around a little with the spelling, is somehow (or at least I am hoping) paying homage to the great Kitty Carlisle …

Luka Bloom:
Ben Folds:
Kim Wilde:

Kim’s cover is included because one of the cover sites that I use crowned it as this song’s best cover. Not sure that I agree … Do you?

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Such a fun song to listen to!

Kitty Karlisle’s sped up, electric version works for me. Very nice cover.

I really like Luka Bloom and appreciate his earnest effort but there is too many wonderful aspects going on in this song to do it justice with simply an acoustic guitar. The whistling helped a bit but in the end just didn’t cut it.

Ben Folds’ introduction of a vigorous piano is a nice touch and his vocals are right on point. The band seems to be having a lot of fun on this one, which scores them some points. Would have been a nice show to be at.

While I respect Kim Wilde’s interpretation, overall, it does not work for me.

Really tough decision between Kitty and Ben. In a close one I went with the ghost of Ms. Carlisle as the band made it more of their own while, at the same time, staying reverent to the wonderful original.

I went with Luka Bloom. He was aided by the video, and the fact that I already know him and like what I’ve heard from him. Also doesn’t hurt that his brother Christy Moore is a longtime favorite.

Other versions also good, although Kim Wilde is in fourth place today.

I’ve enjoyed The Cure’s music for decades, starting with their very first album. Listening to those old albums now, I’m surprised at just how totally great they still sound. I was listening to “A Forest” the other day, and it dawned on me just how absolutely perfectly constructed that song is. This song, too, is just terrific.

All four covers have good things about them, but I really liked the piano on the Ben Folds version. He seems really thrilled to be performing the song.

And while I hate to contradict Richie (actually, I enjoy contradicting him very much), I must point out that Kitty Carlisle was never a regular on the Hollywood Squares. She was a regular panelist on To Tell the Truth, alongside such notables as Peggy Cass, Orson Bean, and Arlene Francis. I used to watch that show with my parents, and I always kinda liked Kitty.

Kitty Karlisle- the emo birthday party version. I was second guessing my eyeliner decision all the way there. When I saw Gabby I froze. Not sure what to do so I went in the closest bathroom and cut myself. Luka Bloom- Christy Moore’s little brother does it simply his way but loses some of the great hooks which make the original so sticky.

Ben Folds-I remember those early days of Elton John before he glammed out, coked out and came out. He was good. Kim Wilde- best version? Sounds like something I’d expect to hear at The King’s Pub on New Year’s Eve. Very commercial over production led to cheese-o-rama. I voted Ben Folds.
