Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Oasis puts forth a spirited and competent cover of the song.

For an a cappella group to take on the cacophony of sound that characterizes this song is ambitious to say the least.

U2’s version is outstanding in most every aspect, although, as usual, Bono’s preening and overacting once again bothered me.

By any fair measure U2 should runaway with this. Their delivery and quality of sound is superb. And yet … I voted The Bobs. I feel that the bizarre sounds they illicit and pitch-perfect interplay of voices truly capture the chaos that The Beatles’ elicited with their masterfully raucous guitar work.

The cover by Oasis was good, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. I know they shook the world when they came out in the mid-nineties, but I wasn’t paying attention at the time. I always assumed they must have something substantial to offer to achieve that level of success, while recognizing I’m not in their target demo. To this day, the only material I’ve heard are the biggest hits from radio and music videos.

The Bobs have appeared a handful of times on this site over the years. I’ve always enjoyed their creativity and talent, but it doesn’t seem like something I would buy or want to listen to repeatedly. This is the first track of theirs that I didn’t care for. I found the vocal sound effects somewhat annoying, and thought I won’t be revisiting that. When I read Dubbs’ review I did play the track a second time.

U2 wins today’s vote by providing the best cover, which was helped by the video. I also noticed Bono’s way-over-the-top overacting. But the thing that almost knocked me outta my chair was the fact that Dubbs praised U2 at all. At this rate, maybe next time I see him he’ll be wearing a Zeppelin shirt.
