Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

I absolutely love the original, and it’s right up my alley. Gorgeous melody, vocal harmonies, catchy sixties folk rock. A real favorite.
The Four Tops are great at what they do, which is usually full-throated up-temp hard chargin’ R & B. I’m surprised they would attempt this.
Southside Johnny is also a good band and when they’re in their element, they can really cook. But, as with the Four Tops, this isn’t their jam. Also a questionable cover for them.
Marshall Crenshaw wins the vote, although I thought his version was good but not great. At least he’s not playing out of position like the other competitors.
I’ve always felt “meh” about this song. Really does nothing for me. Southside Johnny’s version was pure torture for me; takes a song that was neutral for me and made it horrific. Badly Drawn Boy took forever to finally get into the song, and then it was decidedly average. I went with Crenshaw, with his crisp acoustic guitar and clean vocals. But nothing stellar.
