Good God, Ray Charles so owns this song. The soulful, bluesy tone is pitch-perfect for a desperate lament like this.
I liked Elvis Costello’s interesting take on the song but it’s part of a medley so we just can’t accept it as an entry.
The carnival atmosphere that Wanda and Jack put on is also an interesting interpretation.
George Jones does an admirable cover sticking to the song’s original countryfied roots.
I didn’t care for the vocals on The Wrockers’ entry. Add to it that it is not at all creative and it equals a cover that just does not cut it. Busted!
Not thrilled with any of the contestants’ covers as none even comes close to the heart and soul of Ray’s elegy. But vote, I must. So I am casting for Wanda and Jack for adding something different to the song.
Jack White’s input put the Wanda Jackson cover in first place.
Wasn’t impressed with the version by The Wrockers.
I amazed the public by not voting Jones.
Many years from now, when someone mentions “The Country Post” or “The Country Episode”, everyone will know what is meant.
