Such wonderful guitar work on the song. Truly ahead of its time. And the Trans-treatment resulted in possibly the best song on that peculiar album.
I was really impressed that Cher chose to take this odd song on and she knocks out a very competent rendition. Would have been part of the competition but I already had a dreadful time paring down the participants to my self-imposed limit of four.
Never heard of the ’60s band The Road but they deliver a great psychedelic-style version. They really nail the vocals, guitar work and overall feel of the song.
The Dream Syndicate offer a competent, somewhat understated version but I was not overly enthused with the vocals.
The Everly Brothers were another unexpected entry into the fray of Mr. Soul participants. I give them their due for trying but this obviously is just not in their wheelhouse.
The Icicle Works nicely emote the “texture” of the song and while no one can really duplicate Neil’s unique style of vocals (how many would want to? 🙂 ), I liked the tone that this band’s vocalist hit. Nice guitar work as well.
Tough call between The Road and The Icicle Works. Had to go back and re-listen to each and, despite The Icicle Works’ cool, mesmerizing album cover, ultimately, I took The Road …
