Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Love those old black and white Motown videos!

The Proclaimers do Motown! Love it! Can’t get enough of those Scottish accents. And after all the years those guys are still looking dapper as could be.

The Zipheads rampage through Motown. Nice, clean and fun electric assault.

Gregory Isaacs … such a stalwart of old school reggae.

Another difficult call. Three entirely different styles and all delivered very well. I could have literally voted for anyone of these fine covers. I really got into each of them in their own way. Well have to pick one. For whatever reason, this morning I’m going with the venerable legend … The Zipheads? … No … reggae legend, Mr. Gregory Isaacs.

I love the original, and pretty much anything from The Temptations of that era.

Never heard anything resembling rock from The Proclaimers. I bought their first two albums, but didn’t really follow them after that. This cover was good, and I haven’t heard anything of theirs I didn’t like.

The only times I’ve seen Gregory Isaacs drop the ball is when he’s playing out of position. The original is so up-tempo I wasn’t sure if he could pull it off, but he slowed down the tempo, and his soulful island vocals were employed to full effect, winning the vote.

You can’t beat The Temptations here. Perfect for them although given my age when I started to listen to the radio obsessively Rare Earth’s version is what I remember more. I think The Proclaimers were disappointing. Maybe too rock and roll for these guys. The harmonies and great accents not featured. Whether the producer or the choice of song, it wasn’t a fit. The Zipheads improved by increasing the tempo. The drummer working hard, nice guitar parts and enough small changes to make it sound fresher. I knew within seconds I would be voting for Gregory Isaacs. Great vibe, love the horse gallop background percussion, his vocals always so smooth. The Cool Ruler had me feeling irie again.

Great song. The Zipheads’ video was unavailable to me; I should use the Chrome browser instead of Safari. Maybe that’s the problem. Anyway, I did like the Proclaimers’ version, but I had to give it Gregory Isaacs. I have some of his stuff on CD and cassette and I’ve always liked his voice. He does a nice, low-key, dubby version here that grew on me as the song kept playing.
