Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

I was lucky enough to see the Talking Heads on this tour. Just fantastic. The sheer stamina exhibited … non-stop movement … it was exhausting just to behold. One of the more spectacular shows that I’ve witnessed through the decades. Any questions … 🙂
Last December I saw David Bryne’s amazing latest incantation. He continues to be the consummate showman. His close-out was Life During Wartime with a huge video running of ICE goons roughing up peaceful people. Powerful …
I enjoyed Sherie Rene Scott’s soulful, rhythmic, slow-play of the tune, eventually reaching a crescendo. Very interesting interpretation.
The Staple Singers are such a talented and enjoyable ensemble. Their range of genres covered is simply a marvel. Not surprisingly, with their trademark gospel/soul/funk versatility they nail it again with a highly impressive cover.
Freddie McGregor is another of the old school reggae stalwarts. Not familiar with Mystic Bowie but I came away impressed with this collaborative irie rendition.
Another very tough decision owing to three completely different and wonderful styles of music. I would have liked Sheri Rene Scott’s version to be a bit shorter with a quicker culmination toward the eventual climax. Still, I am giving her my vote based solely on the originality of work.
I expected this to be among the easiest choices in a long time, but it ended up being a very close call.
Never heard of the first contestant, but that was surprisingly good. Extra points for the radical re-working of the piece.
Also didn’t know the reggae artist, and was somewhat skeptical. He also exceeded expectations and almost got the vote.
I’m a fan of The Staple Singers, and predicted a runaway victory. Never heard them sound quite like that, and it wasn’t quite what I expected. If I wasn’t already on their side, this could easily have gone to any of the three.
I’m a big TH fan. In fact, I’m reading a book about them at the moment, and they were just talking about that song. I, too, was fortunate to see them with the big band. In fact, the very first show they played with that expanded band was at the Heatwave Festival in Toronto, which I was there for.
I didn’t like Sheri Rene Scott’s slowed down version, and the reggae version had no punch to it. I never would have expected to give the nod to the Staple Singers, but I must say, they did a great job. They won my vote.
