Broc 3 - Cover Me Impressed
Everybody’s Dressin’ Funny … Cover Me Impressed!

Such a venerable and ageless ’60s anthem. Stephen hit his peak early in his career.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

From the outset Girl in a Coma begins with appropriate energy and urgency. Pounding guitar throughout … Neil would be proud. I like the driving, forewarning vocals. And the abrupt ending is perfect. Great cover!

Keb brings a cool, slow and bluesy sensibility to the song. The guy sounds the part of a senior statesmen crooning a soulful lament. Definitely made it his own. No problem at all with this interpretation.

MonaLisa Twins … the more I hear from these talented Austrian twin sisters the more impressed I become. They can play their instruments and their vocals are superb … I love the hint of an accent that peaks out every now and then. I first discovered them on my search for covers for Friday on My Mind and, if you remember, they totally knocked that one out of the park! Along with an impressive selection of covers (lots of Beatles) they have a fair amount of original material, which I have yet to devote much time with. Would absolutely love to see this duo, especially in the legendary Cavern Club, where they’ve recorded much live material.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers … what can you really say? This song is tailor made for their musical sensibilities. Superb version although I was a little disappointed that Mike Campbell never really cuts loose, his expert guitarwork is more of a perfect accompaniment. Along with an amazing catalogue of music, Petty and The Heartbreakers are sometimes referred to as the greatest cover band of all time. Certainly don’t disappoint on this timeless anthem.

Three-way tie between Girl in a Coma, MonaLisa Twins and Petty and The Heartbreakers. After multiple listenings, I narrowly chose Girl in a Coma. Right from needle hitting vinyl they just brought so much urgency to the party!

Girl in a Coma attacks with energy and verve. Good cover that exceeded expectations.

Keb’ Mo’ slows it down and performs a bluesy version. He departs from the original more than the competitors, and wins today’s vote.

MonaLisa Twins also good and energetic, and gets an extra point for performing at The Cavern Club.

Tom Petty and band always worth a listen, but didn’t change the original much, and ultimately failed to “wow” me.

Better post than I would have guessed with four worthwhile covers. Never heard of Girl In A Coma but they put forth an impressively modern take with freshness and style in the arrangement. Great sound. Someone knew how to record properly. A slow core take from the nasal warrior with understated, clean work from a pre-dreadlocked Mike Campbell. I almost drove my ‘68 Benmont right into a tench. Keb Mo featured an element of mystery in a funky rendition. While the organ stabilized the table, the guitars like electric crickets chirped and the weird background voices, is that ecstasy or pain? The live video from The Cavern added plenty of verve and personality and the band seems to be having such a great time. Twins Carrot and Cauliflower won my vote. Carrot can play.
