Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
Surprised to learn The Cure chose to cover this. They earned points by drastically changing the original, and at first I thought they might win the vote, given the two remaining competitors.
I admit I didn’t know Redd Kross until they appeared on CMI. The first photo I saw of them looked like something outta Spinal Tap. Surprisingly good cover here, vocals not necessary.
The Bobs get points for attempting such a challenging cover. I almost invoked The Shatner Rule, which reminds us the point is to entertain.
I ultimately voted Redd Kross.
I enjoyed the diverse options. LA’s McDonald brothers of Redd Kross have been glam/punk/psyching their way through the business since the 80s, long after their haggis burger chain went tits up. I’ve seen them at least once as an opening act. I’ve frequently read of their potential which means that they usually disappoint. Here, I like the instrumental approach. The Bobs’ ambitious attempt had its moments but overall the limitations were also very apparent. From memory, I prefer the old studio version of theirs. I went with The Cure. The layered recording was not only creative but had great sound. Deep boom, pert pert, phasy hazy, mostly ghostly and swooshy.
I had heard The Cure’s version years ago and always liked it. I like Redd Kross and they do a kickass version, even without the vocals, but I really enjoy the trippy, psychedelic Cure version, and I went with them. The Bobs are just silly.
The Cure had a really interEsting take that i greatly enjoyed, but Dang, Rickie Yasko’s ol droogies The Bobs just blew it all away, and bonus points for stage presence too!
