The Violent … industrial rock … not much to say about it … ho hum … why did I include this one?!!?
Tiny Tim … critically acclaimed cover … many feel that Tim’s ridiculous falsetto vocals actually work very well with this song … I tend to agree …
MonaLisa Twins … nice cover … these two sisters are very talented … but … the solos were a drag to endure … I guess it would have been more enjoyable live …
The Dead South … high-energy bluegrass … didn’t change a whole lot but I liked it just fine!
Can’t decide whether Morrison would have been impressed with Tim’s bizarre rendition or opted to punch him out. Either way, I thought it captured the aura of the song perfectly and, thus, earned my vote.
I love The Doors, although I’ve never been crazy about this song. Nor am I thrilled with today’s cover versions. Those solos in the MonaLisa Twins version were tedious. I’ve been a fan of Tiny Tim for ages, and I actually think he did the best version here.
Didn’t think much of the cover by The Violent.
I saw Tiny Tim on TV several times as a kid, but never listened to any of his albums. The only song of his I can name is “Tiptoe Through the Tulips”. The other day, someone mentioned he covered “Stairway”. I didn’t know that, but was intrigued enough to seek it out, and ended up watching several clips from TV from late sixties and early seventies. I then read his entire Wikipedia entry. I had no idea he’d be visiting this site so soon. He surprised me by slapping down the best vocals I’ve heard from him. That high quavering falsetto worked better on this cover than others.
MonaLisa Twins sang and played well, and I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard from them on this site. Good sound quality on the video.
The Dead South wins the vote with acoustic string music backed by good vocals.
Echo & The Bunnymen would have run away with this. They do many covers live and they are almost always very good. They capture the essence of the song, the guitar stings and pings, the keys swirl a tilted circus and the wind blows skirts askew. The Violent gave us industrial dystopia with a mashup of Ministry, Metallica and Roger Waters consulting. Tiny Tim is no stranger to strangeness. He is a warbling, yodeling, vibrato castrato. Here’s a phrase not often heard from me: the accordion was a real help. The Dead South hint at much but achieve little. Not arty enough for Morricone, too lazy for real Americana. Best thing I can say is that it vaguely reminds me of Bad Things from True Blood. I voted for Mona Lisa Twins mostly because everyone else failed to make a positive impression. All the way to the gig Klaus and Rennie carped about being under appreciated side men so the twins threw them a bone.

but in this genre, Tiny’s gotta rule. No poseur here, he used to hang around downtown Hollywood back in the 70s, the real deal.
