THE CLASH of Cover Medleys

David Johansen vs. The Smithereens vs. Richard Thompson
David Johansen:
“We Gotta Get Out of This Place” / “It’s My Life”   / “Don’t Bring Me Down” (The Animals)

The Smithereens:
“We’re Not Gonna Take It” / “See Me Feel Me”   / “Listening to You” (The Who)
Richard Thompson:
“My Generation” / “I Can’t Explain”   / “Substitue” (The Who)

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which medley of cover songs prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On?!!?

All 3 performances are stellar. Absolutely top notch. impossible to choose. I seriously can’t decide.

I’ll pick Thompson, but really, its a three-way tie.

  2. Kerry Black's avatar Kerry Black says:

David Johansen exceeded expectations. You guys are all bigger Johansen fans than I. That might be the most I’ve ever enjoyed him.

The second cover is from The Smithereens Play Tommy, which we visited last month when “Christmas” was featured. I was among the reviewers who praised their musicianship, while wondering at the point of creating a note-by-note replica of such a venerated classic.

I voted Richard Thompson today. It didn’t hurt that “I Can’t Explain” and “Substitute” are among my favorites.

  3. RDubbs's avatar RDubbs says:

No complaints on any of the songs, bands or covers here.

Since I like The Animals (a criminally under-appreciated 60’s band) more than The Who, David Jo and company’s received my vote.

David’s sometimes awkward voice works perfectly paying homage to Eric Burdon and just to watch him deliver this medley exudes his reverence and respect for The Animals. Points also scored with Johnny Rao’s side wink to David as he begins to explode into It’s My Life.
