Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
Chose to post this song due to the bizarre and brilliant covers.
Flaming Lips … slow … haunting … creepy … nice interpretation!
Shatner … always brings his A-game … 🙂
Treepeople … parody perfection … lyric augments are priceless
Facial expressions and, of course, stellar acting abilities, make Shatner the winner (isn’t he always?)!
I didn’t know or didn’t remember the version by The Kingston Trio. This is Sinatra’s song.
The point is to entertain, and, with that in mind, Shatner towers above the rest. Second place goes to Treepeople.
I figured that the standard for this might be Homer Simpson’s take, A Very Good Beer but it’s only 33 seconds long leaving a massive hole in the universe. Lee Hazelwood does a fun take also. I thought The Kingston Trio’s reading was better than I expected and I couldn’t get through Sinatra due to the deadly seriousness and overwhelming strings. If I knew nothing of The Flaming Lips other than the cover efforts displayed on this blog I they were a contender for worst band of their era. Treepeople sounded like a stupergroup formed by ex-members of King Missile and Dead Milkmen. I enjoyed their additional lyrics. Couldn’t deny Shatner his glory here. What a smirking imp! What a ham’s ham! If you took a ham and removed the bone and most of the fat then stuffed it with more ham, you might have William Shatner.
I feel like I just entered some weird parallel universe after listening to those three covers. The Shatner version felt like he was doing a parody of William Shatner doing William Shatner. Tree people did a decent cover, but there was something about the weird, lo-fi fucked up Flaming Lips version that I kinda liked. Like the Flying Lizards doing Money. A weird meta-cover that earned my vote, even though I know I will likely NEVER listen to it again.
