The Original
Kirsty MacColl:
BIG HIT
Don’t know why this version surpassed Kirsty’s original in the public’s eyes. That’s showbiz, I guess …

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!
Disclaimer: Votes cast from Florida may or may not be counted.
Lydia Loveless has a cool stage name but her version is essentially a carbon copy of the original.
The Young Fresh Fellows turn it into a sped-up rocker, a nice reinvention from the original. The original lacked any real punch, which the Fellow’s nicely remedied.
Never heard of Dawn but she is a quite accomplished author, theologian and songwriter. Interesting. Another sped-up version and some nice guitarwork from The Anderson Counsil.
Young Fresh Fellows, pretty easily …
Yeah, Kirsty’s voice is better than the other female vocalists who tried covering her here, plus, her version has good guitars. I’d have to give it to the Young Fresh Fellows for putting a nicer spin on it.
I didn’t know the original. I bought Kirsty’s first two albums (still got ’em) but failed to keep up with her later output.
I think of Tracey Ullman as a comedian, and didn’t realize she made pop songs. She had her own TV show which showcased her many talents, so I’m not surprised she can sing.
I only know of Lydia Loveless from her affiliation with Bloodshot Records. I have a bunch of Bloodshot CD compilations, and I’ve bought merch and music from them over the years, so I still get frequent emails about artists, releases, tours and such.
Young Fresh Fellows version was good. Never heard of the last act. Not bad. Lydia Loveless gets the vote.
