Tom Waits:

Definitive Version?

Okay, let’s slow down. Obviously, it is downright sacrilegious to dub any cover of the Master’s as a definitive version. With that said, this song was tailormade for The Ramones in the same vein that Jersey Girl was destined to find its way into Springsteen’s setlist. The Ramones do tare it up though in their remarkable cover.

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

    Such a fun, rollicking tune!

Broken Social Scene … nice airy feel, strong vocals, strong cover!

Petra Haden and Bill Frisell … interesting, childlike vocals with effective musical harmonies.

Michael Carpenter and The Cuban Heels … here we get a big band feel with perfect vocals for the song.

Loved them all … went with Michael and the boys.
