Me First & The Gimme Gimmes vs. Frank Zappa vs. Leningrad Cowboys
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes:

Leningrad Cowboys:

As a rule I do not post videos that are restricted in any way and must be viewed on another site. So ordinarily I would have just tossed this cover. But it is too brilliant, too spectacular, too awe-inspiring, just too, too, too … Take the journey over to YouTube and queue up the version posted by Tenkanen, then sit back and bask in its extravagance! Trust me, you will thank me later!!!

SPACE

Oh the disharmony! Much like Harlan County there are no neutrals here. It is your solemn responsibility to decide which cover song prevails. In other words … Which Side Are You On!??!

Such pretentious tripe!!! The worst of the horrid ’70’s … Pat Boone’s rendition is infinitely more entertaining!

Me First guys give it the usual treatment.

Zappa gives this drivel the ridiculous treatment it deserves but, ultimately, proves as unlistenable as the original crap.

Leningrad Cowboys … almost makes me glad that this rock abomination was created in the first place … almost … clear winner and clearly significantly better than the predecessor.

Never thought I’d see an appearance by Zeppelin on CMI. Almost equally amazed to see Zappa for that matter. I wonder if today’s edition was posted by one of Dubbs’ interns. Maybe he returned to Ireland again, while handing over the reins to an underling.

I like just about everything I’ve heard from Me First. I appreciate how they can play at breakneck speed without devolving into noise.

I only saw Zappa live once, but I bought a couple of live albums, and have a couple bootlegs. Off the top of my head I can’t think of a single cover he’s performed anywhere. They say he considered himself a composer first and foremost. Astonishing to hear him do “Stairway”.

Leningrad Cowboys are quite the spectacle. I haven’t seen anything like this since their last appearance on the site. More an event than merely a concert. They get the vote.

Wish I coulda voted for The Beatnix. That was excellent! They did a great job of making the clip look retro. The guy playing John looks a lot like him, and they have all the mannerisms down. I’ll have to check out more of their stuff.

I’m surprised Richie didn’t include the well-known Tiny Tim version. Ugh, the Pat Boone version had me cringing. I did like the Me First version, cranking it out at breakneck speed. I wish I liked Zappa more than I do, which isn’t much at all. I downloaded a torrent a few years ago with 83 of his albums, which sits here on my iTunes, most of the albums played once or twice. His catalog is vast, and it would be great if I liked it. Oh well. I didn’t like his version today. The Leningrad Cowboys, though… such bombast, such spectacle… and really, even without it, they still did the best version.

I would have voted for The Beatnix. That was inspired lunacy! The suits, the mannerisms, the B&W blurry footage, amazing! Pat Boone was weird without any redeeming piece. Someone should have put a stop to that. Where was Phil Spector and his pistol then? I can’t believe Zappa committed to the entire 9 plus minutes and they didn’t play it as a joke. Me First did it stripped and ripped. Distilled to the essential nuggets. On planet Phargyll, when the three largest moons align, a massive four day celebration featuring the sacrifice of a small borf takes place and early 70s hard rock from Earth is a focal point of the launch. Torches, chanting, a female military choir and some of the finest of threads stolen from Kerry’s wardrobe are key elements of the psychedelic fever dream. The L Cowboys with the voltage to win.
