Cover Me Impressed
With a focus on the 60's-90's music scene, CMI is a Paradiso for Lovers Cover Songs! Each post focuses on a particular song and provides its original and most popular recordings as well as covers versions. Patrons of CMI vote on the most deserving cover version, which will then live to compete again, battling other cover songs in a future post.
Bands, musicians, troubadours, and their ilk, submit your cover songs for future CMI competitions.
CMI welcomes the opportunity to introduce new artists.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band feat. Nils Lofgren:
Bruce Springsteen opened his concert at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn on April 23, 2016, with a tribute cover of “Purple Rain”. This performance occurred two days after Prince’s death on April 21, 2016. The show featured the stage bathed in purple light, and the band delivered the song as an opener rather than their usual setlist, featuring a notable guitar solo by Nils Lofgren.
Fun Fact: Prince’s Purple Rain held the Number One spot on the Billboard 200 album chart for 24 consecutive weeks before finally being surpassed by Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A.

So many great ones to consider but this is my All-Time Favorite R.E.M. song!

Huh! Michael Stipe agrees with me!!!
There’s also an a cappella version of this song. Usually I would include something like that in the post. But I don’t like it much so, considering it is my blog, I have chosen not to include it.

The word “masterpiece” can sometimes be overused. Definitely NOT the case here!

From “Live Rhymin'”. I LOVE the way The Jesse Dixon Singers blend with Paul!
Paul Simon and The Jesse Dixon Singers:
Highly Acclaimed Cover
Some call this the “definitive modern cover”. Supposedly earned high praise from Paul Simon. Personally I’m not that impressed, which is why I left it out of the competition.

Don’t know why this version surpassed Kirsty’s original in the public’s eyes. That’s showbiz, I guess …
